Termites Control in Dayton, Ohio: How to Protect Your Home from Termites

Termites are one of the most destructive pests that homeowners in Dayton, OH, can face. They feed on wood and other cellulose materials, such as paper and cardboard, and can quickly cause extensive damage to homes and other structures. In this blog post, we will explore the characteristics and behavior of termites, how to prevent and treat infestations, and the role of Dayton Pest Control in termite control.

Characteristics and Behavior of Termites

Termites are social insects that live in large underground colonies containing up to 2 million individuals. They are small, typically less than half an inch in length, and have a slightly curved body and a relatively small head. There are several species of termites, but they share similar characteristics and behaviors.

The workers are responsible for gathering food and building the colony. They feed on wood and other cellulose materials and can travel up to 100 yards (a football field!) from their colony to find food sources. Soldiers are responsible for defending the colony against predators, including ants and other termites. They have large, powerful mandibles that they use to crush their enemies. Reproductive individuals, or swarmers, emerge from the colony in large swarms during the spring and summer months to mate and start new colonies.

Termites are attracted to moist environments, and they can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, gaps in windows and doors, and other small openings. Once inside, they can quickly infest the structure, feeding on the wooden frame and other cellulose materials. This can cause significant damage to homes and other structures, leading to expensive repairs.

Termite Control: Prevention and Treatment

Preventing termite infestations is key to avoiding costly repairs. There are several steps homeowners can take to reduce the risk of infestation. It is important to eliminate any sources of moisture around the home, fix leaks, and ensure proper drainage to avoid creating moist environments that termites are attracted to. Removing any sources of wood or cellulose materials from around the home, such as firewood, lumber, and old cardboard boxes, can also help prevent infestations.
Having regular termite inspections is important for detecting any signs of termite activity and treating infestations before they cause significant damage. Dayton Pest Control offers professional termite inspections and treatment options. Our trained professionals can identify the type of termites and the extent of the infestation, then recommend the best course of action.

One common treatment option is the use of baits. Baits are placed around the home and contain a slow-acting poison that is taken back to the colony by the workers. This can effectively eliminate the entire colony over time. Another treatment option is the use of liquid termiticides, which are applied around the foundation of the home to create a barrier that effectively eliminates termite colonies. This can effectively prevent infestations and protect the home from future damage.

Role of Dayton Pest Control in Termite Control

As a trusted pest control service in Dayton, Ohio, we offer a comprehensive range of termite control services. Our team of professionals is trained to identify and treat termite infestations, using the most effective methods to eliminate the problem and prevent future infestations. We use the latest equipment and techniques to ensure the safety of your home and family, and we provide ongoing support and maintenance to keep your home termite-free.

When you contact Dayton Pest Control for termite control services, our team will begin with a thorough inspection of your property to identify any signs of termite activity. We will then recommend a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation, taking into account factors such as the type of termites, the extent of the infestation, and the location of your home.

Mole Control in Dayton, OH: Understanding the Problem and Finding a Solution

Mole Control In Dayton Ohio

Mole control in Dayton and surrounding areas can be tricky, and understanding the problem you are up against is important to protecting your property from these little nuisances that wreak a lot of havoc.

What is a mole?

Moles are small burrowing mammals that have adapted to a subterranean lifestyle and in fact spend their entire lives underground.  They have very poor eyesight and what they lack in vision make up for with a keen sense of touch.  All moles have sensitive snouts and clawed digits that they use to tunnel through the ground with.  In Ohio, there are primarily three species of mole seen: hairy-tailed moles, star-nosed moles, and the eastern mole.

Mole range/territory

As stated previously, moles live underground and spend the majority of their time burrowing and tunneling through soil.  They are quite capable diggers, and in fact the eastern mole (prevalent in Ohio) is capable of tunneling out a 160 foot burrow in just one night!

If you’ve never seen a mole “run” or tunnel, it is usually clear to see as a row or line of raised soil is visible in your lawn where the mole has been tunneling.  This soil will also feel soft underfoot as you step on it as there is now a hollowed out tunnel under your feet!  They will create a vast network of these tunnels all over your lawn causing a large amount of damage in a very short amount of time.

In fact, male moles typically have a territory that covers a range of approximately 2 acres, while females generally cover about ½ acre.

Mole diet

Moles are insectivores.  95% of their diet consists of earthworms.  A common misconception is that moles eat grubs, therefore treat your yard for grubs and the moles will go away.  While it is true that moles will feed on grubs, it is not their primary food source.  They will feed on a variety of things including earthworms, grubs, and insects, with earthworms at the top of the list.

Moles need to eat 70-100% of their body weight each day to keep up the energy level needed for the incredible amount of digging they do!

Mole behavior

Moles are extremely territorial by nature.  Two male moles will fight if they encounter one another , except during mating season.  Some tunneling networks may overlap, but moles do not play well together.  Breeding occurs in late February-March and the female will raise the pups on her own in a nest that is typically a little deeper underground (approximately 2 feet).

Once breeding has occurred, the gestation period is about 42 days, and the young are weaned between 4-5 weeks old.  A litter typically consists of 3-5 offspring.  Moles are sexually mature at about 10 months of age and most live for 3-5 years.

Mole control in Dayton, Ohio

Pro Zone Pest Control can help you rid your lawn of unwanted moles.  We do this primarily through a process of baiting active mole tunnels using a proven bait that mimics their favorite food source “The Earthworm”.

We understand how and where to bait, and will explain the process to you every step of the way.  Don’t let moles overtake your yard, and let us stop moles from keeping you from enjoying your beautiful lawn this year!  Give us a call today for a free consultation.

Bed Bugs in Dayton: Understanding the Lifecycle and Treatment Options

Bed Bugs Treatment in Dayton

Bed Bugs are probably every person’s worst fear when it comes to pest-related problems.  The thought of having them invade your personal space will literally keep you up at night!  Bed Bugs have been and continue to be a huge problem here in the Dayton area, but Pro Zone Pest Control has the solution to solve your problem.

At one time, bed bugs were thought to be nearly eradicated in the United States.  We now see them in every part of the country, from 5-star hotels to cruise ships, movie theaters, and your very own bed.  Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers, and that is how they are moved from one location to the next.  They will catch a ride on one person’s belongings and move from place to place.

Bed bugs are blood-feeding parasites that are primarily oval in appearance with flat bodies.  Contrary to some beliefs, they do not spread any disease after they bite.  Most people also believe that you can only get bed bugs if you have a dirty home (not true!), although a tidy house certainly does help when it comes to treatment.  Here at Pro Zone Pest Control, we have treated everything from trailer homes to million-dollar properties.  Bed bugs do not discriminate!

The Bed Bug Lifecycle: The Fascinating (and Gross) World of Bed Bug Reproduction

Understanding a bit about bed bugs will help catch the problem early and help keep a small problem from becoming a large one.

In addition to being flat and oval, bed bugs are generally reddish-brown.  Adult bed bugs are approximately 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch long and are clearly visible.  Juvenile bed bugs are called nymphs and have the same shape as adults but are more yellow-white.

Bed bugs will feed on various hosts, including poultry, rodents, cats & dogs, but their favorite is the human.  Bed bugs go through three life stages: eggs, nymphs, and adults.  Eggs are approximately 1 mm long (about 2 grains of salt) and are very difficult to see.  They have a sticky coat and are laid in the cracks and crevices around bedding, sofas, etc.  After hatching, they become a nymph and begin feeding immediately.  A nymph will go through 5 molting stages (each requiring a blood meal) before reaching adulthood.

Adult bed bugs will live approximately one year in optimal conditions.  Reproduction in a home or business with a constant temperature between 70 & 85 degrees is rapid, and they breed year-round.  One fertilized adult female bed bug can lay about 1-5 eggs PER DAY!  That is approximately 500 eggs in her lifetime.  Eggs will hatch after 7-10 days, and the total time from egg to adult bed bug is about 1 ½ to 2 months.  As you can see, it does not take long for a home to become overrun with bed bugs!

Bed bugs are incredibly resilient and can live for multiple months without feeding.  Some studies have shown them to survive for up to 18 months without a blood meal.  The point is you cannot wait them out!  They will hunker down and wait for you to appear and for the dinner bell rings!

The bigger question is, how do we get rid of them?

Bed Bug Heat Treatment: Why it is the Best Solution for Bed Bug Eradication

Pro Zone Pest Control has been treating bed bugs for many years now, and our preferred method to eradicate them from a property is heat treatment.  This is a method of safely raising the temperature in your home to the point that bed bugs cannot sustain life.  Heat is lethal to all insects and arachnids (at the proper temperature), and using this principle. We have found the proper temps, methods, and equipment to remove bed bugs from your home without using a chemical application.

Generally speaking, the target temperature desired to effectively kill all stages of life (adult, nymph, and eggs) is approximately 140 degrees. Pro Zone Pest Control will guide you through the process of preparing your home for treatment and what to expect along the way.  This is a one-day process and only requires you to be out of the home for the better part of a day.

When heat treatment is not an option, we do have alternative treatment options that are highly effective and may work better depending upon circumstances.  Our goal is to make your home bed bug free so that you can rest easily!

Winter Pest Control: Protecting Your Home from Mice & Rats in Dayton, OH

Winter Pest Control Services in Dayton OH

Winter season is upon us in the Dayton area, which means shorter days and colder nights. When it’s uncomfortable outside, and you just want to cozy up where it’s nice and warm, you can be assured that the common house mouse couldn’t agree more. Mice top the list for the most common complaint we receive during the winter months. While most other bugs slow down until warmer weather arrives, mice are busy making your home theirs!

Believe it or not, some people feel sorry for mice and think they are cute and are just trying to survive the elements, but you do not want them overtaking your home.  Once these pests enter your home, they seek out your food and begin wreaking havoc.

One pair of mice alone will consume approximately 4 pounds of food and deposit 18,000 droppings. You heard that right, 18,000!!!

Generally speaking, they will contaminate about 10 times what they eat. They are also common carriers of the following diseases: Salmonella Food Poisoning, Rickettsial Pox, Meningitis, Leptospirosis, and Ringworm.
Aside from contaminating your food source and the risk of disease transmission, mice will damage other products in your home as they begin to explore, including books, paper products, and family heirlooms in storage, you name it! Mice are also well-known for chewing on electric wiring and power cords, causing major concern for starting a fire in your home.

The Common House Mouse

The house mouse (Mus musculus) is a highly adaptable creature who thrives in various conditions. They feed on nearly every type of human food and reproduce at an incredible rate (more on that in a bit). They are found throughout the U.S. and are the most common rodent problem in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Let’s talk about identification.

The appearance of the Common House Mouse

Although it may vary slightly from region to region, the typical mouse generally has a fairly common appearance. An adult mouse will be gray or medium brown over most of its body, with a lighter shade on the underbelly (not white). They have moderately large ears compared to the rest of the body and a tail nearly hairless and about as long as their body. The overall length is generally 2 ¼ to 4 inches long, and they have relatively small feet and eyes.

The life cycle of the Common House Mouse Behavior

Mice generally nest outdoors, with peak breeding seasons during spring and fall. However, under optimal conditions (such as in your home). A single female mouse may produce up to 10 liters per year, which is about 50 baby mice!! Within 3 weeks of birth, newborn mice will begin to take short trips away from the nest and take solid food.

The Common House Mouse Behavior

Mice have very poor eyesight and rely heavily on smell, taste, touch, and hearing. One keen sense they possess is touch and therefore rely on their sensitive whiskers as they feel their way along walls, burrows, and passageways. Mice also have a fantastic sense of balance as well as some other impressive physical abilities, which include:

  1. Ability to jump up to 12 inches off the ground
  2. Run up nearly any vertical service
  3. Run horizontally along an electric wire
  4. Squeeze through an opening approximately ¼ inch (about the size of your thumb)
  5. Very capable swimmers
  6. Able to jump from a height of 8 feet to the floor and survive.

Mice are most active at night and regularly cover a designated area or territory. Mice are naturally inquisitive and often explore and check out new objects within their territory. This helps the pros at Dayton Pest Control come up with a plan to stop them from overtaking your home. By understanding their habits, we can present baits and traps in a way that will encourage them to interact with this “new” object and therefore eliminate your problem.
